QNN 7051

If you are doing Net Control, or if there is no Net Control 30 seconds after start time and you wish to volunteer, the below format should be observed. You will find it very helpful to copy the relevant capital letter parts down on a "cheat sheet" in pen, with your own callsign, to guide you during your net control.

1) Maybe 10 minutes ahead of time, certainly (or again) 3-5 minutes ahead of time, and announcement on 7050:

VVV CQ DE VK5PQR VK CW NET IN __ MIN QSY 7051.2 UP 1 +

2) Announcement on 7051.2 from a few minutes before 0830Z:

VVV CQ CQ CQ DE VK5PQR VK5PQR CW NET AT 0830 UTC INFO AT WWW.VKCW.NET/NET
<AS>
VVV CQ CQ CQ DE VK5PQR VK5PQR CW NET AT 0830 UTC INFO AT WWW.VKCW.NET/NET
<AS>
VVV CQ CQ CQ DE VK5PQR VK5PQR CW NET AT 0830 UTC INFO AT WWW.VKCW.NET/NET
<AS>
etc.

3) At 08h29m30s UTC: send a time signal on 7051.2 if you have a clock accurate to within on second or a receiver on WWVH etc. This is not a necessary step, but if you do it, do it correctly:

QTR 0830Z E E E E E E E E E T — this last dash being long and starting exactly on the 00 seconds of 0830Z.

4) Open the VK CW NET using this exact format (any requests for format changes should be approved by Admin):

VVV CQ CQ VK CW NET DE VK5PQR VK5PQR GE CW NET NOW OPEN ALL WELCOME PSE CHECK IN NOW + K

Note that on this first call, the use of "QNI" is avoided deliberately so newcomers are not discouraged or confused.

5) When people answer, just acknowledge each station (without sending your own callsign) and ask them to stand by:

VK1ABC GE <AS>
VK2DEF GE <AS>
VK3GHI GE <AS>
VK4JKL GE <AS>
VK6MNO GE <AS>

6) Put out another call when/if no check-ins are heard:

CQ VK CW NET DE CALLSIGN QNI PSE K

Note this time "QNI" is used, and don't do this more than once if there is no response to such a call, then send this:

LAST CALL CQ VK CW NET DE CALLSIGN PSE K

Note this time "QNI" is again left out.

Acknowledge as in 5) above any further check-ins. Once there is no response, continue:

6) Call each station one by one, but start with someone who is a regular on the net and knows how to keep it short and what to do (e.g. not to send signal report etc), because that person will set the trend for the others that will follow
when you call each in turn, e.g.:

VK4JKL K
de vk4jkl ge qso vk2def k
R PSE <AS>

VK2DEF K
de vk2def ge qru k
VK2DEF ES VK4JKL PSE QSY UP 1 QSO = VK4JKL K
r up
VK2DEF K
r up 1

VK3GHI K
de vk3ghi ge qtc vk5pqr k
R PSE <AS>

VK6MNO K
de vk6mno ge nil tu su
VK6MNO QNX = VK1ABC K
de vk1abc qso vk5pqr after net pse k
R PSE <AS>

7) Close the net with this exact format with the real callsigns of course and count yourself in the total:

CQ VK CW NET DE VK5PQR QNS VK1ABC VK2DEF VK3GHI VK4JKL VK6MNO QNN VK5PQR TOTAL 6 = QNF 73 DE VK5PQR <AR><SK>

VK3GHI DE VK5EEE QRV K
(and then you vk3ghi sends traffic for vk5pqr) and after that vk5pqr will QSO vk1abc

Note that NO late check-ins are taken into the net after it has closed ("QNF" been sent as above) after that anyone calling in is just handled as a normal communication style.

Notes:

  • Remember to QRS (12-15WPM) on Tuesdays/Thursdays on 7051 NET
  • Be strict, Net Control is the only one in command, you control and set the pattern
  • Don't engage in chit chat, nor respond to reports by sending reports etc, keep short, sharp
  • Sending slowly but very few words as per above formats is effective, time saving, clear
  • Your 73 are sent to all at the end of the Net when closing, not to each check-in, GE is enough
  • Resist sending your own call sign, license requirements are at start and end, and every 10 mins
  • E.g. when calling up each check-in in step 5) above send only their callsign not yours
  • This Net is expected by participants to be short/terse and the brevity is a benefit to all
  • The objective is to reach QNF (net closure) as soon as possible, keep this in mind, keep it brief
  • This page is linked to from NET — anyone interested in participating please refer to that page.
